The Review – BCM 302

PEER REVIEW 1: Leo Twemlow

My fist pitch review is Leo Twemlow project, ‘Foreign Footy’  will be a video essay and blog post collaboration on the sport of rugby league in America.

CONCEPT

Leo has a clear knowledge of the sport of rugby league and therefore already understands the context and current state of the sport that is trying to fit into the American market. A clear problem is stated and justified with a solution to fix such problem over the course of the semester.

METHODOLOGY

Leo plans to create video essays and distribute these videos to niche sub Reddit’s raising awareness of the sport, As i have used reddit in the past to share my own creative videos I have found huge success. This platform also allows for a feedback loop as it’s very common for people to comment on reddit as well as achieve growth for such a niche project. My only suggestion is to potentially edit short clips out of these video essays and upload them on to YouTube shorts If you want some more info on YouTube and how to maximize it then Social Media Manager has some great insights! https://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/8-ways-to-maximize-your-youtube-marketing-results/

UTILITY

Leo’s DA is relevant and has the ability to create change in the American sporting market. Due to America’s population, the sport of Rugby League has the potential to slide into the American sporting scene and compete with a similar sports league in NFL.

Personally I cannot think of many key weaknesses of this project as it does have the opportunity for growth and development in a niche market. I’m personally a massive fan of rugby league and I didn’t know that there was plan to make the game in USA which is really interesting to me.

PEER REVIEW 2: Charlotte Pierro

My second pitch review is Charlotte Pierro’s project, ‘PIERROPERSPECTIVE ’  will be photography based project based on instagram and youtube, and will consist of creating photography based content for instagram reels as well as her normal post’s.

Concept

Charlotte is doing a photography based Instagram of different people and scenes, that was previously created, she intends to expand on videos, reels, YouTube account and eventually create professional portfolio website to start her career in photography. Committed to the project over recent years, has slowly made a portfolio for herself and can only get better.

Method

Charlotte’s main methodology is implementing the F.I.S.T principles in ‘Pierroperspective’ with consistent Instagram posts and short vlogs on her channel still favoured today, reaching a wide audience, utilising the platforms, adding locations to Instagram may be a little tip. Likewise in my DA I am prototyping Instagram posts and reels as well that are popular. My only suggestion is to build upon some of the points you have already brought up in creating some reels and YouTube content which I’m keen to see what you come up with as I need some lockdown inspiration as well, you could also potentially make and how-to’s content around that just as a creative nudge for creating those reels.

Utility

Consider the value of the project, who the audience is, travellers? Adventures? Hobby? Potential clients, in this case may be a purpose of quality, real images.

Twitter Review – BCM 325

This post will provide a critical self-reflection of my live tweeting ability during the movie screenings in BCM325 – Future Cultures, and the levels of engagement I achieved in my tweets. Despite being new to live tweeting while watching a movie, I felt that I missed key aspects of dialog or story as I was trying to make a meme or ask a thoughtful question to ask my peers but throughout this time I slowly improved.

Most of the engagement on my original tweets came from discussion about the film and its ideas about the future. I believe these tweets do well because a key component of the BCM325 sessions is to continuously unpack future cultures tropes and ask meaningful questions about the future that these films provide.

Other tweets that were based on funny comments or memes gathered better engagement this time around as I put more effort into my memes, comments and were based on film that were funny and relatable to my peers.

During the sessions I also live tweeted additional interesting sources about the films. Which received mixed levels of engagement, due to my peers were unlikely to read an article while also attempting to live tweet about the film as the same time. Posting additional sources is something I need to work on and do more often.

Finally, I found engage with other people tweets very interesting as we posed questions to one other about the movies we watched which lead to my own further research into what was being questioned furthering my knowledge of the topic that were being discussed about the film. I also engage in the tweets of other viewers through replies, retweets and likes. This something that I got a-lot better at during this assignments and found that i enjoyed the most.

ReviewTime – BCM325

DA BETA

The first digital artefact what I will be looking at is James’s artefact on weather technology is detracting us from the beauty of sports.

James clearly displays his personal interest in sports in the blog and in the pitch. Which I relate to on a personal level as I enjoy watching sports also ands have never thought if technology is affecting our ability to watch and make the right decisions during the game.

I advised a website that talks about the future of the NRL to inspire a podcast or blog topic to discuss the introduction of forward pass technology as I would be interested his opinion on the matter

feeling beta than ever – UOW Visual Arts Society DA

The second digital artefact that I will be looking at is Emma’s project on creating a future business plan for the UOW Visual Arts Society.

Emma clearly displays her concept clearly both in the blog and in the beta. Beginning her beta with changing the direction of her digital artefact to design a long term business plan for the UOW Visual Arts Society. In terms of utility, her digital artefact is relevant to anyone this is running a club within a university.

I advised a link to a YouTube video of one of Gary V’s creating a successful digital social media presence as well as creating a successful online business.

The beta future of Beyond Branding

The last digital artefact I looked at was Amy’s blog on the future of her design company, ‘Beyond Branding’, and were studying BCM325 will take her in the future of her company.

I commended Amy on her company that she had been working on for quite some time, and her ability to set clear goals and expand her business. I also suggested a influencer Gary V who’s content is based around increasing personal socials media following, with the emphasise of the importance of research into new platforms and techniques to better her Business.

Peer Review Comments – BCM 325

DA 1: IS TECHNOLOGY DETRACTING FROM THE BEAUTY OF SPORT? BCM325 PITCH

One scenario I think of is the lack of frame in slow motion in order to decide if a try is awarded or not.

I advised a website that talks about the technologies that have been implemented in sports, to help with his research and DA blog posts.

I also linked James to our week 3 Paalumäki Heli 2001. ‘” Imagine a Good Day”–Bertrand de Jouvenel’s Idea of Possible Futures in the Context of Fictitious and Historical Narratives. Vol. 1: The Papers of the Nordic Conference on the History of Ideas.

DA 2: Is productivity-improving technology making us less productive? Digital Artefact Pitch

The second digital artefact that I will be looking at is Emma’s project on whether productivity-improving apps are improving our productivity or making us less productive.

Emma clearly displays her concept clearly both in the blog and in the pitch. Beginning her pitch with a rhetorical question attracts listeners to feel involved and appeals to the emotions. In terms of utility, her digital artefact is relevant and must be talked about in a modern day society fuelled by the increase of technology aiming improve productivity.

I advised a link to a blog article analysing the book that she has chosen to base her tic tok’s to hopefully give her an idea’s for her analysis.

DA 3: The Future of Beyond Branding

The next pitch I briefed was Amy’s blog on the future of her design company, ‘Beyond Branding’, and where studying BCM325 will take her in the future of her company.

I commended Amy on her company that she had been working on for quite some time, and her ability to set clear goals and expand her business.

I also suggested a influencer Gary V who’s content is based around increasing personal socials media following, with the emphasise of the importance of research into new platforms and techniques to better her Business.

Live Tweeting – BCM 325

This post will provide a critical self-reflection of my live tweeting ability during the movie screenings in BCM325 – Future Cultures, and the levels of engagement I achieved in my tweets. Despite being new to live tweeting while watching, I felt that I missed key aspects of  dialog or story as I was trying to make a meme or ask a thoughtful question to ask my peers. But I slowly improved through put the weeks.

Most of the engagement on my original tweets and comments on other’s came from discussion about the film and it’s ideas about the future. I believe these tweets do well because a key component of the BCM325 sessions is to continuously unpack future cultures tropes from these films.

Other tweets that were based on funny comments or memes gathered little to no engagement. They were based on funny and relatable moments to my peers. I believe these tweets didn’t do as well due to them having to be rushed while watching the film which didn’t allow for much thought due to the time constraint to move on to the next tweet.

During the sessions I also live tweeted additional interesting sources about the films. Which received mixed levels of engagement, due to my peers were unlikely to read an article while also attempting to live tweet about the film as the same time. Posting additional sources is something I need to work on and do more often in the next round of live tweeting sessions. I often get caught up in the film or Twitter and forget to search for extra information.

Finally, I found engage with other people tweets very interesting as we posed questions to one other about the movies we watched which lead to my own further research into what was being questioned furthering my knowledge of the topic that were being discussed about the film. I also engage in the tweets of other viewers through replies, retweets and likes. This is something else I need to improve on as I often only see the tweets from the people I follow, or the most prominent tweets being shared by the people I follow. I tend to forget about clicking on the BCM325 hashtag and viewing all the most recent tweets as they come in.

To conclude I plan to watch the movie before the tutorial in order to prepare for the live tweeting exercise better, as well as making memes beforehand to hopefully increase the relevant and humour of them to hopefully encourage more interaction. I also plan on engaging with the lecture content and set readings to increase the integrity of my live tweets for the next block of movies.

Game Mechanics

After a quick read through the rules, the game seemed quite convoluted, but we slowly got the hang of it more as we played the game; looking back at the rules if there was anything we weren’t sure on. For example, we didn’t know when to use the one-minute hourglass that was placed in the box, we didn’t end up using it unless it was in a passive-aggressive way if the other team took too long to think of a clue or guess. The game is recommended for 2-8 players and has been suggested to play with 4+ but we felt it worked well with 4 and maybe too stressful with more players.

There are 25 cards laid out in a 5×5 rectangular grid, randomly with a different word on each. The game aims to have two rival spymasters who know the identities of 25 agents (agents being the words on the cards), and their teammates only know the agents by their ‘code names’. The spymasters give their team one-word clues along with a number with how many cards match the clue word. Their teammate points to which word they think the spymaster has chosen. If a word is chosen that belongs to the opposing team, they get the point. If an innocent bystander card is chosen, there are no points for anyone, and that team skips their go. If the assassin is chosen, the other team automatically wins the game.

After each round, we changed teams which made the game more interesting as you had to try and find words that your new team player would make sense of. To know which code names belong to each player and which cards are the innocent bystanders/assassin, there is a map card that can be shown below:

Response to the game

I enjoyed this game for several different reasons. One of these being the game’s mechanics, they were simple and logically, making the game very easy to pick up quickly which is perfect for the party game genre. I also felt as though the mechanics allowed for you to focus your energy on using your imagination and strategy when it came to creating and guessing clues, this harmonious relationship made the game flow very nicely. Although the game can challenge you at times you never feel overwhelmed because the game is so simple in its mechanics.

I also felt the rules did a great job explaining the game mechanics and setting the boundaries for the game. One thing I did notice was that the story of the game gets a bit lost when playing, though it is established well in the rule book and reasonably in the visual imagery of the game, the game’s story isn’t as strong as many other games with a mystery theme. I don’t necessarily believe that this harmed my game experience but perhaps if the story was more prominent throughout the gameplay my response to the game might be that bit better.

Another part of the game that for me made it that much better was, getting to play it with a great group of people. Of course, I am going to have a good response to a game when the people I got to play the game with made it that much better, everyone got into the game and got competitive and that is the way I like to play my games.

One annoying aspect of the game that is didn’t enjoy though was the ability of the field operatives to guess the correct spy’ and be able to win the game on chance.

I could point the exact point to the thing that made this board game so fun was that there were two levels of hidden communication, with the cards themselves and the clues that are given and that is what made me really enjoy and highly rate this game, rather it is the cohesive relationship between its mechanics, strategy and imaginative elements and players that make up my fondness response to this game.

Comments and Self Reflection Part 2

My first comment was on Michaela Shales blog (BCM215 DA BETA). Michaela said that she changed her original idea of playing video games to starting a blog based on the same idea of f gender sexualisation in video games. I gave her one recommendation at potentially looking potentially using twitter to find a community and start an informal discussion and convert followers to interact with her blog post and receive more feedback.

Second comment was on Tobias Joshua Thomas’s blog (BCM 215 Beta blog) he discusses why he chose the topic and he’s love for video games and what topics his has planned into the future of his DA, and the promotional struggles and lack of a feedback. I also gave a recommendation of joining a twitter discussion if there is any on the specific game and media texts which could potentially lead to more readers and engagement with his content.

Third comment was on Ruby Losinno’s blog (RUBY REVIEWS – BETA), she discusses her DA being based around reviewing and potentially reviewing different game shows. I suggested her to look at a particular academic journal about the critique of the price is right which could help in her review process and blog.

From this I got to see a lot of different ideas of what goes into the gaming community and different ways that I could further improve my DA. As well as the importance of laying the information out of the reader/viewer, I would much rather just read the key points of a post then have to look through for the important stuff and having relevant topics, something that will engage the viewer. The ways I could improve myself for future comments would be by having more sources instead of just one or two. As well as get sources from a wider range of areas, such as Journal Articles, academic research and YouTube videos (reviews or game/topic breakdowns). Also that my comments could possibly be longer and better structured in order to let the reader get a better understanding of what I am saying.
