Contextual report

Introduction:

My Digital Artefact (DA) Aquilah Productions has become a major part of bachelor and communications degree whether it was a part of an assessment or not, I have been developing it since I was in high school for a way for me to express my creativity and passion for photography and videography while adding to my professional portfolio. I have thoroughly enjoyed growing as a creator and learning new skills throughout the development of this Instagram page.

Background:

These Instagram, Facebook and YouTube pages have been created to showcase my skills. This page is an online portfolio that is live on the Internet. It show case’s my adventures that I go on. I have also focused on the Instagram reels sides of things over this subject. The market and use for portrait orientated videos have grown rapidly because that’s the predominant shape that our screens are. Potential clients can see what type of images I could take for them.

Proposed Utility:

Based on research Instagram pages tend to have a theme or a niche. Here is a blog about how to find your niche. My Instagram is a mix of two. It is a constant battle that I am fighting on my Instagram. I want to be content-based on my enjoyment of adventuring and exploring places around Australia which is a highly saturated niche on Instagram. Here is an example of a great adventure account. I also want to share my own personality of what I like and who I am as a person. But I don’t know what the future holds for this account. I may commit to one or the other.

The utility is for people to enjoy my content. This content would be useful for other photographers, who want to get inspired by me. It would also be aesthetic to people who have a passion for exploration and adventures or have an interest in photography and videography.

Starter pack:

As you can see in my starter pack I have a range of ideas and audiences. I have three distinct separate ones, but some cross over.

I have the “photographer”, the ‘adventurer/travel’ and the “explorers‘’.

Proposed production method:

As for my methodology is to look at the past for guidance. And I revamped my posting schedule to a daily photo post to my Instagram and Facebook.

For my photos I take them on my Sony A73, I then upload them to my laptop, edit them in Lightroom and export them using optimal settings for Instagram (2 500px longest edge, 72DPI, sharpening for screens, and in a 4×5 crop or 1×1 or 2×3 depending on the image) Here is a blog post explains why your post ratio is really important.

I will then research hashtags and get a mix of low traffic and high traffic hashtags. Low traffic is generally between 5 – 10k images, these hashtags are very niche. High traffic images are anywhere from 100k – 1 million images. These hashtags are very general such as #photographer #ocean. Within these high traffic hashtags, my images get lost very easily due to the immense amount of images on the tag. I’ll then post them to Instagram from my iPhone.

Here is the website that I use to generate my hashtags to use on my photos and video work. It uses AI to identify the photo/video and picks the best performing hashtags to use from very saturated hashtags to not so popular hashtags.

l have also created daily Instagram stories based on the daily photo to promote audience retention and promote engagement and well as gain feedback on my work. I have also created video edits of my adventures for YouTube and have promoted sneak peeks on both Instagram and Facebook to drive conversion to watch the entire edit on YouTube. I have also thought of ways to be creative from home as shooting outside is against covid 19 restrictions. I going to have a go at creating Instagram reels based on popular trends that I notice and see where that take the growth of the account.

Event : Instagram reels.

I did some experiments with Instagram Reels and I got over 3K views on one of my videos.

The feedback from this video was excellent. It got over 60 likes and only 6 comments. The insights for Reels are still not available through Instagram.

This upload was very simple and took only 30 minutes to create the video as I used old photos that I have taken in past which I learned from Gary’s Vaynerchuk blog post on how to create 64 pieces of content a day.

Here are some other videos I posted as reels.

The feedback from using this feature of Instagram has taught me over this iteration of my digital artefact:

  • I have an audience that enjoys my reel content.
  • This new platform ‘reels’ has potential to blow up posts.
  • Researching by scrolling through reels to find trends that relate to my media niche really inspires me to create this type of content.
  • Using trending music helps for reels, because people can search for a song and then see videos that have used the song.
  • My mix of high traffic and low traffic hashtags worked well.
  • It was also my most successful content that I have posted over the this iteration of my DA.

These are some examples that I based my reels off:

Event: Posting Daily Photos to Instagram/ Facebook

Through the process of creating and uploading daily, l have noticed a gradual increase in audience retention and engagement through an increase of likes, total impressions as well as a slow increase in followers on all three media outlets.

For Instagram I have gained 110 followers since the beginning of the project, as for Facebook I have mange to gain 10-page likes and for YouTube, I gained 5 subscribers. Which has been my most successful growth of this particular DA since starting this back in 2018.

Event: Posting Personalised Instagram Stories

I did some experiments by creating more personalised Instagram Instagram stories of my everyday opinions and things that I was interested in.

The feedback from these posts was excellent. I would get over 30 responses to the polls I would create on Instagram.

This upload was very simple and took only 30 seconds to create the Instagram stories as I would be watching a movie, tv-show or listening to music which I did on a regular basis during the lockdown.

My Top Gear poll:

The feedback from using this feature of Instagram has taught me over this iteration of my digital artefact:

  • I have an audience that enjoys my Instagram/Facebook story content.
  • This feature of the platform allows me to show my personality and interest to my followers.
  • This feature of Instagram is also one of my favourite to use.

Event: Posting Instagram Reels to YouTube Shorts

I did some experiments with YouTube Short where I took the same Instagram Reels and posted them on the YouTube short feature of YouTube. These unfortunately were the worst performing aspect of my DA

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/cYldoirvvUY

The feedback from this video was little to non-existent. It got 5 views and 0 comments.

This upload was very simple and took only 30 seconds to create as it was a video edit that was created for Instagram and required little effort to post it to another platform.

Here are some other videos I posted as reels:

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Rv6Zget__Uc

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/sWTpSTC8mTw

The feedback from using this feature of YouTube has taught me over this iteration of my digital artefact:

  • I don’t have an audience on YouTube Shorts
  • I was to post more frequently on there I could create some traction I believe
  • I need to do more research into the feature and find better tips and tricks to perform better on this platforms feature.
  • It was also my most lese successful content that I have posted over the this iteration of my DA.

Event: Working with Campus Group

From my Instagram page, I have picked up work with Campus Group when one of my mates recommend to his boss that was looking for a photographer for an upcoming Jägermeister event in the university bar.

From here Amelia contacted me to get a quote for the job and emailed me the photography brief.

From this experience I have learned:

  • How to follow a creative brief.
  • Shoot on location and attention to detail.
  • Time management
  • How to create an invoice.
  • I now want to pursue this as side gig while I’m at university.

Event: Reposts on Instagram

In all of my posts on Instagram, I use hashtags and tag people in the image. This gives those accounts permission to repost my image. Getting your image reposted on Instagram is a great way to build your audience and connect with new people. Here is a blog post on how to get featured by these hub accounts.

For instance, my image was reposted on @gracewright one of the people with who I did a shoot would share my post’s to her story which would increase the amount of engagement and followers to my account.

Overall I am very happy with how my DA has progressed throughout this semester of University. I have had many successes that aren’t directly related to my online presence but without my outline presence, these opportunities may not have become available.

Thanks for reading my DA contextual Essay. If you have any feedback or suggestions drop a comment below.

Aquilah Productions (Digital Artefact Beta)

My Digital Artefact (DA) Aquilah Productions has become a major part of bachelor and communications degree whether it was a part of an assessment or not, I have been developing it since I was in high school for a way for me to express my creativity and passion for photography and videography while adding to my professional portfolio.

Content is the trigger of customer interaction (Rahal, 2021).

Methodology

As for my methodology is to look at past for guidance, I’m going to revamp my posting schedule and brainstorm new ideas for different content to post within my chosen social medias with the idea to meeting new clients and building a more professional portfolio.

Daily, photos content to both my Instagram and Facebook feed using relevant hashtags to succeed with the algorithm and achieve growth.

l has also created daily Instagram stories based off the daily photo to promote audience retention and promote engagement and well as gain feedback of my work.

I have also been thinking of ways to be creative from home as shooting outside is against covid 19 restrictions. I am going have a go at creating Instagram reels based on popular trends that I notice and see where that take the growth of the account.

Users

This concept is relevant too similar or liked minded people like myself and to people who are interest in exploring and adventuring or have an interest in photography and videography. This da has also developed my personal portfolio and has allowed me to reach out to companies in search for paid work.

Audience

The target audience of my project includes fans of adventure, travel, photography and videography, typically aged between 18-24. While it’s mainly male dominated (55%), I do consider my content to appeal to both genders.

Process

Through creating and uploading this adventure content daily for the last two months, l have notice a gradual increase of audience retention and engagement through an increase of likes, total impressions as well as a slow increase in followers on all three media outlets.

For Instagram I have gained 40 followers since the beginning of the project, As for Facebook I have mange to gain 30 page likes and for YouTube 10 subscribers.

From here my plan is to create a website using square space and open an online print store and target Facebook ads towards the baby boomer generation for a source of income and reinvest into more Facebook and Instagram ads for continue growth of my adventure content. I also plan to be a more active user on Instagram with more commenting on others posts.

Beta – BCM 325

In response to the feedback from my pitch video I immediately change the direction of my digital artefact to better suit the direction of BCM 325. So, for my digital artefact I decided to write three different blog posts based on what will impact my own personal future in becoming a social media manager and the prospects that Aquilah productions will have.

The future of Aquilah Productions

In this blog post, I will be looking towards the future of Aquilah Productions in terms of attracting more clients and building a personal brand.

Futuristic content

From the movies that we have been live-tweeting this semester, I have a common theme of the specific colour and general aesthetic that are chosen to convey the future to their audience. I plan to bring this to my platform as it seems to have a substantial niche on Instagram and would an interesting topic to explore in the future of my digital artefact.

Posting schedule

I plan to revamp my posting schedule to future proof my digital online presence, therefore, securing the future for my employment post my university career.

This includes

  • Increased stories and posts with myself in them to create a personalised brand.
  • Hone my creative and craft
  • Increased content that is posted to my accounts
  • To start a Tic Tok

Gary V

Gary V is one of the greats In creating a successful digital social media presence as well as creating a successful online business and has greatly influenced me over this assignment in creating a business plan for the future of Aquilah productions.

The main piece of advice that I take away from Gary is to sell a personality before a product or service. With this in mind, I plan for the rest of the semester to introduce myself to my audience to build a community and appeal to future clients.

The Pitch – BCM325

“Business owners must try to adapt strategic choices to match the current internal organisational situation and external market conditions.”

McDowell, Harris and Geho, 2016, p. 1907

Aquilah Productions has become a major part of my Bachelor and Communications degree, whether it be part of an assessment or not have continued developing it since I was in high school for a way for me to express my creativity and my professional portfolio.

‘Brands’ notoriously have difficulty retaining interest over time (Preece et al. 2018, p. 331). And, this is especially true for niche accounts like mine and is integral that I must continue to adapt to the continuous paradigm shifts in modern media in order to stay relevant in the current media climate.

Aquilah Gaming – Final Thoughts

Ideation

In the beginning, I wanted to challenge my creative side, for my digital artefact, I want to start an online twitch stream and YouTube channel called Aquilah Gamming dedicated around playing different versions of modded Minecraft and potentially other modded games, with the idea of documenting my experiences and lessons while playing the game with friends and sharing this to a potential community on twitch.

Methodology

My methodology began when I started to research ideas and concepts related to gaming that I wanted to further my knowledge on and build a community. I stumbled upon a game my mates and I were already playing together on a regular bias Minecraft. I aimed to upload YouTube and stream to Twitch on a weekly. However, this idea fell through and I decided to create weekly streams on Twitch in order to succeed with the algorithm, achieve growth and receive feedback from my work. I can also used my other DA, Aquilah Productions to help promote Aquilah Gaming.

Background Research

My analytical framework I have experience throughout the creation of this DA of live streaming modded Minecraft is the “Hats of Affect: A Study of Affect, Achievement and Hats in Team Fortress” (Christopher Moore 2011) relating to both versions of Sky Factory 4.0 and Crazy Craft 4.0 had different achievements and goals in order I made progress in and had a feeling of gaining “players with the accumulation of social capital and occasional in game items”

Another source that helped me with the creation of my DA is the ‘Making the most of MINECRAFT’ (Custom PC, 2014), Which explains how to get the most out  making Minecraft and how it’s a culture phenomenon. I will also use platforms such as Reddit articles as well as word of mouth to find the latest Mods and game modes to play.

Response to Feedback

I had good feedback in regard to the pitch and beta blog posts! Firstly I had a few people say that modded Minecraft would be a lot of fun to play together and stream it to the internet the main point from Chris was my lack of framework to analyse my specific experience.

Aquilah Productions – Digital Artefact

My digital artefact is a discovery/exploration series made up of photo and short 1-2 minute videos with the key subjects of people interacting with nature and man-made features as well as them alone. I developed this project through my passion for content creation, adventure and capturing visuals. For my digital artefact, I plan on continuing my hobby social media account Aquilah Productions which I have run for the past two years during school. Through documenting and creating content of my adventures and explorations and posting to Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.

Starter Pack

I achieved this through uploading daily, high quality photo content to both my Instagram and Facebook feed in order to succeed with the algorithm and achieve growth l have also created daily Instagram stories based off the daily photo to promote audience retention and promote engagement and well as gain feedback of my work. I have also created fortnightly video edits of my adventures for YouTube and have promoted sneak peaks on both Instagram and Facebook to drive conversion to watch the entire edit on YouTube.

Through creating and uploading this adventure content daily for the last two months, l have notice a gradual increase of audience retention and engagement through an increase of likes, total impressions as well as a slow increase in followers on all three media outlets, for Instagram I have gained 80 followers since the beginning of the project, As for Facebook I have mange to gain 40 new page likes and for YouTube 10 new subscribers. I found most of my inspiration for content creation and style through YouTube tutorials for both photo and video editing. I also found inspiration through travel/adventure Instagram pages.

Follow for Follow

l also gained followers through usingGary V’s success video for social media growth, through this source l followed his $1.30 strategy to gain followers and build my community.   By searching location and similar hashtags to find content to interact with. Through this DA I also received a Dm from a new company called Moori Drinks which has ended up in paid work for them in December shooting a Kickstarter video for them with long term work potentially available to

Paid Advertisement

I have also experimented with the use of paid advertisement on both Facebook and Instagram to target specific ages, locations and specific personality and interests in order to convert accounts to engage in my piece of content or convert into followers.

Ads:

My first video edit I made for my DA was from my adventure to Exploring Sydney’s Royal National Park – Wedding Cake Rock and was uploaded to YouTube channel as well as a sperate edit as a preview was uploaded to both my Facebook and Instagram to promote conversion from those social media’s to the full video on YouTube and to subscribe for more content.

YouTube:

Facebook:

Instagram:

I received a lot of positive feedback on both Facebook and Instagram due to the high impressions and total views, As for my YouTube channel struggled to get traction due to being the first post in a 4 month break as for the medium does not allow photo uploads like Instagram and Facebook, thus starting with the algorithm again as an active user, this can be seen in my fortnightly uploads after this original videos.

As for a technical point these videos were easily made due to already gained style and knowledge of final cut pro, for future content would to upload a vlog every other week to maintain a weekly upload schedule and challenge myself due to never vloging before.

Aquilah Productions – Beta

To recap, my digital artefact is reflected around my desire for exploring the outdoors the vastness and scale of natural world and my passion in creating visual content such as photography, videography, and graphic design l have chosen to centre my digital artefact around this hobby that l have done with mates for the past 2 years, and hopefully continue to build my portfolio.

Over the past two month my digital artefact has dramatically changed due to daily posting of high quality photos which have been posted at optimal times on both Facebook and Instagram and have achieved my goals of creating a central hub for nature adventure content.

Gained Followers/Follow for Follow

I have seen a gradual increase of followers across all three media channels, With instagram with the highest with 60 followers gained with Facebook in second place with 10 page likes and YouTube in third with 5 subscribers gained. l also gained followers through using Gary V’s success video for social media growth, through this source l DMed on instagram using the search location feature in the look out for local content creators with a similar page to myself. I managed to connect with Adam Rozmus which caused a follow for follow situation and potentially working together on a project.

Hashtags/Tags

Hash tagging on new posts gained followers and heaps more engagement on the post. I used a mix of popular Instagram tags and tags and related to the actual photo I was posting in. Hash tagging caused an influx of engagement on a post and lead to actual followers.

Business Instagram Insights

I used Instagram business tools to see the progress of my DA and to figure out the main audience l was attracting towards my page and the total impressions of each post. I focused on impressions. The 2 photos below show the difference between the start of the project (Left) and the result now (Right).

Paid Advertisement

I have also experimented with the use of paid advertisement on both Facebook and Instagram to target specific ages, locations and specific personality and interests in order to convert accounts to engage in my piece of content or convert into followers.

Facebook Ads

Where Now?

From here my plan is to create a website using square space to create an offical portfolio. I also plan to be a more active user on Instagram with more commenting on other’s posts.
