The Review – BCM 302

PEER REVIEW 1: Leo Twemlow

My fist beta review is Leo Twemlow project, ‘Foreign Footy’. After the first round of feedback. Leo’s has iterated and streamlined his content production. As he originally pitched a series of video essays and blog posts that were going to be shared in bite sized pieces of content to both Instagram and Tic Tok to drive conversation to his blogs and video essays. But however decided to drop the video essays and blog portion of the projects and focus on Tik Tok and Instagram.

Primarily, I believe that the move towards smaller, bite-sized content is the way to go with this project as it’s easier to create and share on multiple social media platforms and more importantly, I believe it will help Leo survive in the attention economy. As I have learned over my own past BCM projects and especially my most recent version of my own DA the power of Instagram and Tik Tok helps to get around this issue.

As Leo showed in his beta, his analytics suggest that there is an audience for type of content and that it benefits the sport on a global stage and is relevant and has the ability to create change the American sporting market. Due to America’s population, the sport of Rugby League has the potential to slide into the American sporting scene and compete with a similar sports league in NFL.

Since providing feedback on Leo’s pitch, I’ve had an idea that I think might help improve Leo’s engagement. I think that creating videos explaining the general rules and tactics of the game could be a cool idea and also explain the attributes and skills that are needed to succeed at different positions on the field, As many Americans have probably never heard of the game and what it entails.

Another suggestion I would make is to have a go at uploading the same content on to YouTube shorts  as another platform to spread awareness on as well as it potential to reach a further audience that not necessarily on Tic Tok or Instagram. If you want some more info on YouTube and how to maximize it then Social Media Manager has some great insights! https://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/8-ways-to-maximize-your-youtube-marketing-results/

Personally I cannot think of many key weaknesses of this project as it does have the opportunity for growth and development in a niche market. I’m personally a massive fan of rugby league and I didn’t know that there was plan to make the game in USA which is really interesting to me.

PEER REVIEW 2: Charlotte Pierro

My second beta I reviewed was Charlotte Pierro’s project, ‘PIERROPERSPECTIVE’. After the first round of feedback. Charlotte has iterated and streamlined her content production. As she originally pitched creating a website for her portfolio in order to peruse a career in professional photography. She has also revisited her first year photography account and for this iteration of it was going to be a photography based project on Instagram and YouTube, and will consist of creating photography based content for Instagram reels as well as her normal post’s.

As Charlotte showed in her beta, her analytics suggest that there is an audience for type of landscape and reels based content. I also really like her photographs and video work as well as the general edit she puts on them.

Since providing feedback on Charlotte pitch, I’ve had an idea that I think might help improve her engagement. Therefore, my suggestion I think that creating videos explaining her editing process could be a great cool idea to try out as many photography influencers I follow create similar content and due to the current global mainstream is the short video platform, and people browse the video to get the opportunity they want to know or cooperate. Putting videos on professional video social platforms will get more attention and reach a larger audience. As for her website it could be a good idea to potentially open up a print store to sell your works on, and use marketing on Instagram to drive sales which could be a neat sideincome.

Another suggestion I would make is to have a go at uploading the same content on to YouTube shorts  as another platform to spread awareness on as well as it potential to reach a further audience that not necessarily on Instagram. If you want some more info on YouTube and how to maximize it then Social Media Manager has some great insights! https://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/8-ways-to-maximize-your-youtube-marketing-results/.

After browsing these two betas, I think that any success cannot be separated from failure. But if you persist, you will definitely get good results. I also learned a lot of their good advantages and special points. I hope that in the future, we can all develop the projects we are interested in into our own business.

Is Social Media Management a Good Job?

The project that I was asked to undertake was to research a career that I want to peruse after university comes to an end. Since the beginning of my communication and media degree, I have always wanted to peruse a career in a social media management career. Through conducting secondary research and comparing different sources together in order to find out if this career is for me.

What is social media?

Social media can be thought of in a few different ways. In a practical sense, it is a collection of software-based digital technologies—usually presented as apps and websites—that provide users with digital environments in which they can send and receive digital content or information over some type of online social network. In this sense, we can think of social media as the major platforms and their features, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. We can also in practical terms of social media as another type of digital marketing channel that marketers can use to communicate with consumers through advertising.

In Hesmondhalgh and Baker’s book the Creative Labour Media work in 3 cultural industries breaks down the objective goals and attributes in deciding what good work is.

Self-Esteem/Self Realisation

Samuels’s ‘9 skills every social media manager must have’ illustrates the skill and technical abilities that are needed to succeed in this industry to become more employable, and also recommends additional sources to improve in the areas that the reader may need to improve on. The skills involve “communication, writing, creativity, efficiency, traditional and digital, customer care, making connections, agility, data analysis.

Job Security

Appel’s ‘The future of social media in marketing. Which breaks down the future of social media marketing into three different predictions of the consumer, business, and public policy as well as looking at the immediate and long-term futures in these areas.

The Immediate future:

There are many interesting future research avenues to consider when thinking about the role of influencers on social media. First, determining what traits and qualities (e.g., authenticity, trust, credibility, and likability) make sponsored posts by a traditional celebrity influencer, versus a micro-influencer, or even compared to a CGI influencer, successful is important to determine for marketers. Understanding whether success has to do with the actual influencer’s characteristics, the type of content being posted, whether the content is sponsored or not, and so on, are all relevant concerns for companies and social media platforms when determining partnerships and where to invest effort in influencers. In addition, research can focus on understanding the appeal of live influencer content, and how to successfully blend influencer content with more traditional marketing mix approaches.

The Far Future:

There are early indications that social media might feel different in the future. As mobile phones are held in one’s hands and wearable technology is strapped onto one’s skin, companies and brands are exploring opportunities to communicate to users through touch. Indeed, haptic feedback (technology that recreates the sense of touch by applying forces, vibrations, or motions to the user; Brave et al. 2001) is increasingly being integrated into interfaces and applications, with purposes that go beyond the mere call or message notifications.

Current Issues in social media management

Covid 19

Mountifield, C & Sharpe’s paper ‘Managing Social Media Content During a Global Crisis: Interview With Ben Read, Social Media Manager at World in Motion’ explains how Covid 19 has affected social media content which is integral to learn about as it is most likely to affect my employment in the future and I need to stay up to date with the new techniques of social media marketing strategies to remain employable in the future.

Conclusion

Through conducting secondary research and comparing different sources together I have concluded that a career in social media management has succeeded in multiple areas that are portrayed in Hesmondhalgh and Baker’s book the “Creative Labour Media work in 3 cultural industries” and resulting is a job that I want to peruse after my studies at university.

Beta – BCM 325

In response to the feedback from my pitch video I immediately change the direction of my digital artefact to better suit the direction of BCM 325. So, for my digital artefact I decided to write three different blog posts based on what will impact my own personal future in becoming a social media manager and the prospects that Aquilah productions will have.
